about

Tremolo

There are a couple of rules in modern music production that you just aren't supposed to break. Musical problems that are incredibly easy to solve with modern tools.... One being pitch and tuning...it's fairly easy to have a track where everything is perfectly in tune. The other is tempo, by using klick tracks and quantize functions you can make your track fit snugly into the rhythmic grid.

Throughout the Aftonland album I wanted to break rule number 2 by having pieces that would be devoid of a set pulse...which is perfectly ok if you are the first to record your stuff. Also by not having a set tempo you are more or less forcing the listener to follow you wherever you are headed.

On the third track on Aftonland Tremolo I recorded a Danelectro electric resonator guitar which is a fairly odd instrument as it acoustically sounds a bit like a slightly chunky Banjo but when going through an amp it becomes an object of warm lush beauty…The idea was that I wanted the guitar to sound like ripples on dark water. Using the tremolo and spring reverb to amplify that even more.

So what sound could compliment the guitar…?

Over the years Ive reached out to Lars Fredrik Froisle to work on a couple of things. And he has two ways of collaborating with me...either it's total radio silence. Arctic submarine silence. Or he returns swiftly with stuff that just lands itself in the center of the track and both explains and amplifies and then he just casually sprinkles a couple of musical question marks here and there…! On Tremolo he recorded a Hammond part that is both an hommage to the old scandinavian prog heritage but also plays musical hide and seek with the guitar...Perfect.

The idea of Tremolo, Fading Joni and The Final Option is obviously to lead the listener between the longer tracks. Sonic amuse-bouche or musical palate cleansers that are incredibly important to the overall story of Aftonland.

Tremolo is a stiff espresso in a comfy chair before we dive into the most hardcore track on the album.
